Working with curiosity

What attracts you to work? As a dance teacher and psychologist (B.Sc.) I am interested in what moves people. For my taste, control and incentive systems do not take curiosity and other essential factors into account. Besides money and pressure – what other factors are there? Meaning. Self-efficacy. Flow. But also recognition, social connections, playfulness, and pride. The list is definitely longer... Intrinsic motivators carry us on - and to the goal.

 

I completed my bachelor's degree in psychology in 2013 with a thesis on intercompany sports and memory. The lifetime changeability of the brain has fascinated me throughout my studies: we are equipped for new! I would like to understand successful learning processes in adulthood and effective interventions. Also to create work contexts that are productive, healthy and meaningful for individuals and organizations. Since I have been conducting trainings in conflict moderation and counselling, I have been gripped by how people can cooperate profitably. What goes wrong when creativity and productivity go down? I have experience as a trainer and moderator and am a member of KoMeT e.V.

 

Why an internship at Kessels & Smit, The Learning Company?

The idea of relying on strengths appeals to me. 

I want to support the Learning and Developing of individuals and organizations, and so be close to the people and the relevant questions. I want to lend language to ideas, stories and the unsaid. I am also interested in investigating and designing: translating researched knowledge into energetic suggestions that make people and organizations want to discover. Learning formats, that tempt reflection and action.

That's why I'm doing an internship at Kessels & Smit, The Learning Company. In the next weeks I will experiment, read and write about jobcrafting, storytelling and flow.

 

Jobcrafting, storytelling & flow

Jobcrafting refers to the idea that employees actively shape their tasks and relationships at work. They do so because they are knitting their professional identity and meaning. I find this concept exciting because it is about fitting the person, work and organization. If the employer grants degrees of freedom for jobcrafting, they get motivated employers in return. The goal for the employee is the flow, the promising area of being challenged so you will stay and thus, have the possibility develop even further.   

 

Storytelling - the narrative need to tell oneself and others a (good) story that creates meaning and professional identity - emphasizes authorship and responsibility. Storytelling is an engine and a strategy: to see and place one's own contribution in a larger context. The danger of job crafting is that it can lead to exaggeration – individualism without connection, exhaustion because it is all about you. This horror image escapes those who start with themselves, and they do not stop there, but create content and shape the cooperation with others. That is also a way to follow your curiosity during your job, knowing and appreciating that many others work with you on your biography. During my internship I would like to investigate job crafting between individuals and organizations.
